Composers for media usually need to create tracks for an exact pre-defined time duration, either for sync to picture, or to fit within a defined time slot for a broadcast commercial. Pro Tools has been the favored Digital Audio Workstation for this kind of work given its intuitive tools designed for this purpose, but as more and more composers choose to work within Logic Pro X, the need arises to find a way to do it within Logic’s interface.
Start Setting up your Time-Defined Logic Pro Session
Start your project by picking a tempoThe speed at which a piece of music is performed, often indicated in beats per minute. with a metronome, then calculating the approximate number of bars you’ll need for your desired tempo. Set up your Logic Interface for Time display
Make sure that time is visible in LCD counter. Right-click the counter at the top, select Customize Control Bar and Display, select Custom, and make sure one of the time options is selected.
In Marker panel of the List editor, set the View dropdown to “Show Event Position and Length as Time”
LockA lock symbol indicates that aspects of the score layout are fixed. These symbols can be shown or hidden with the View menu in Finale. your End Marker to SMPTEThe acronym, standing for "Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers," used for the time code track that's key to motion media editing. It's absolute time code for sync purposes.
- To set the playhead position at your desired location, do one of the following: Click in the time field in the LCD display at the top and drag or type to set a value
- Click in the Playhead position line at the top of the tracks area
- Click the “+” in the List Editor Markers Tab, then edit the Position time field
To create a marker at your Playhead position, do one of the following:
- Use the shortcut ⌥’ (or ⌃⌥’ to create one “without rounding” for an exact position) to create a marker at the current playhead position
- Use the “+” in the Marker tab of the List editor to add a marker at the current playhead position, then refine its position by clicking in the numbers in the time display.
► We want to create a marker that doesn’t move if you change the tempo. To do that, either
- right-click the marker, or
- select it and then select Options in the List Editor, and choose “Lock SMPTE Position”.
Calculating the Number of Bars in Logic Pro
With your SMPTE-locked marker in place, you can change variables in the List Editor and watch what happens as you adjust them. Changing the tempo and time signature will change the number of bars available, and you can do this interactively by clicking and dragging any number in the List Editor’s view of a particular parameter.

Using the Tempo field of the list editor, it’s possible to make granular adjustments by dragging the decimal places of the Tempo number. When you release the mouse, you can see the relative position of the end of your MIDI data and the location of the End Marker. Be sure to allow for decay of reverb and other effects. You can see the decay duration in your Reverb plugin’s settings.You can also edit your reverb decay by using a fade.
To create a fade, do one of the following:
